Ghana, Kenya and Burkina Faso seal spots at 2026 Women’s AFCON
Ghana, Kenya and Burkina Faso confirmed their qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday following a decisive night of action in the final round of qualifiers.
Ghana swept aside Egypt with authority, turning a tight opening half into a commanding 4-0 victory.
Both teams approached the first period with caution, limiting creativity and denying each other clear chances. Defences were well-structured, and neither goalkeeper was seriously troubled before the interval.
That balance vanished once the Black Queens increased their tempo after the restart.
They seized control, pressing higher and winning crucial duels, while Egypt struggled to maintain composure under pressure.
Ghana converted their dominance into goals, punishing defensive errors and stretching the contest beyond reach.
The emphatic win gave them a 7-0 aggregate result, confirming their return to the continent’s biggest stage.
In Banjul, Kenya secured a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over Gambia to complete a 4-1 aggregate success.
The Harambee Starlets were quickly drawn into a physical and tactical affair, with both sides working tirelessly to disrupt build-up play.
The goalless first half reflected Gambia’s resilience and Kenya’s struggle to break through a compact defensive unit.
The breakthrough eventually arrived after sustained Kenyan pressure in the second half.
A well-worked move resulted in the decisive goal, and from there the visitors managed the match with maturity.
Gambia attempted to respond but lacked the cutting edge needed to unsettle Kenya’s organised back line.
The victory ensured Kenya’s place in Morocco next year, maintaining their upward progression in the women’s game.
Burkina Faso completed the trio of qualifiers by overcoming Togo 1-0 in Ouagadougou, matching the result from the first leg.
The Stallions Ladies showed purpose from the opening whistle, using energy and precision to dictate play. Their early goal rewarded a dominant approach and energised the home supporters.
Togo produced an improved performance in the second half, pushing numbers forward and searching for a route back.
However, Burkina Faso remained composed defensively, protecting their narrow lead and denying the visitors a way through.
With a 2-0 aggregate outcome, they will now look ahead with confidence to the tournament ahead.
The 2026 Women’s AFCON will be hosted in Morocco, where the three newly qualified nations will join the continent’s elite.
After years of rising investment and development, their successful campaigns underline the expanding competitiveness of women’s football across Africa.
