Ghana winger Joseph Opoku completes Swansea City switch

Ghana international Joseph Opoku has completed a move to Championship side Swansea City after the Welsh club agreed a deal to sign the promising winger on a four-year contract.

The 20-year-old arrives from Belgian side Zulte Waregem, with Swansea also holding the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months.

Rapid rise from Ghana to Europe

Opoku began his career at Ghanaian club Great Corinthians FC before moving to Belgium in 2024 to join Jong Essevee.

Later that year, he completed a switch to Zulte Waregem, where he played a key role in helping the club win the Challenger Pro League and secure promotion to Belgium’s top flight.

The winger enjoyed a breakthrough 2025-26 campaign, scoring 10 league goals and providing six assists in 34 appearances, performances that earned him his senior debut for Ghana in May 2026.

Swansea back young Ghanaian

Head coach Vitor Matos believes Opoku has the qualities needed to make an immediate impact in the Championship after proving himself in Belgian football.

“He is a young player, who has been exposed to a lot of senior football in Belgium.

“He will be able to adapt to the physicality, the intensity and the amount of games in the Championship as we know he is a fast and sharp player.

“Opoku has joined us here in Austria, and he has had his first training session and we’re excited to have him here.”

Confidence in attacking potential

Sporting director Ben Stevens also welcomed the arrival of the Ghanaian winger, highlighting both his club performances and international progress.

“Really excited with Joseph joining us and looking forward to seeing his attacking potential flourish in Vitor’s team.

“Two full seasons with Zulte Waregem in Belgian’s top division plus being involved with Ghana national teams highlight the ability of this young talent.”

Opoku’s arrival strengthens Swansea’s attacking options ahead of the new Championship season and represents another significant milestone in the career of one of Ghana’s emerging football talents.
