Ghana international Daniel-Kofi Kyereh joins VfL Osnabruck after injury absence

Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has joined VfL Osnabruck after a difficult period disrupted by injury, with the Ghana international returning to competitive football following more than two seasons on the sidelines.

The 29-year-old left SC Freiburg after making only seven appearances for Freiburg II in the Regionalliga last season. Kyereh had previously scored two goals in 12 Bundesliga matches for Freiburg, but his progress was halted by a serious injury which kept him out of action for an extended period.

Kyereh has now signed for Osnabruck, who have made an encouraging return to the 2. Bundesliga. The club scored three times away at Heidenheim, who were in the Bundesliga last season, although Osnabruck eventually lost an entertaining match 4-3.

The attacking midfielder has extensive experience in Germany’s second tier, having scored 27 goals in the competition during spells with Wehen Wiesbaden and St. Pauli. He joined Freiburg in 2022 and was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2022 World Cup.

Osnabruck had been monitoring Kyereh for some time before completing the move. He trained regularly with the squad during the summer, allowing the club to assess his condition and footballing ability before offering him the chance to continue his career in professional football.

Kyereh will wear the number seven shirt at his new club and will reunite with Timo Schultz, who coached him during his successful spell at St. Pauli.

“These last few years have been very difficult for me. I never lost hope of returning to the pitch. VfL Osnabruck gave me a great deal of support, took my situation and my current status into account. This trust means an enormous amount to me. I know Timo Schultz from our successful time working together at St. Pauli and I know how he sees football,” said Kyereh.

Schulz said he was delighted to be working with the player again and highlighted both Kyereh’s footballing qualities and his character.

“Through our time working together, I know how exceptional Kofi (Kyereh) is, both as a footballer and as a person. The last few years have undoubtedly been extremely difficult for him. I am therefore all the happier that we are working together again,” said Schulz.

The move gives Kyereh an opportunity to rebuild his career after a prolonged absence and adds a player with proven 2. Bundesliga experience to Osnabruck’s squad. His previous record at Wehen Wiesbaden and St. Pauli, combined with his international experience with Ghana, made him a target for the club as it began life back in the second tier.

Osnabruck’s attacking promise was already evident in their 4-3 defeat by Heidenheim, when they scored three goals against a side that competed in the Bundesliga last season. Kyereh’s arrival provides further competition and experience as the club continues its campaign in the 2. Bundesliga.
