Sulley Muntari, former Black Stars midfielder, has spoken out about the challenges of playing in the Ghana Premier League, explaining why Mubarak Wakaso chose against joining Hearts of Oak.
Muntari, who concluded his illustrious career with a brief stint at the club during the 2021/22 season, made 11 appearances and scored one goal.
While many fans hoped Muntari would extend his stay, he chose not to, citing the league’s poor standards.
The Champions League winner with Inter Milan described the Ghana Premier League as a “big hole” into which money is being poured without improvement.
Muntari also revealed the uncomfortable conditions, including poor changing rooms and a lack of respect, further highlighting the struggles players face in the league.
“I didn’t even take one penny [to play for Hearts of Oak]. I wanted to like make it strong so the following year my other players can come gradually,” he told 3 Sports.
“So if Waka (Wakaso) doesn’t want to play, I’m not blaming him because Waka (Wakaso) won’t probably be able to contain them.
“Listen, if you go to play matches, the changing room smells badly. That respect is not there. Even my shirt, I don’t let them wash. I take it home all the time.”
