GFA begins search for new Black Stars coach

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have formed a five-member committee to begin the search for a new coach for the Black Stars.

The committee was announced by the GFA following a meeting between the association’s management and the ministry in Accra on Friday, 2 October 2026.

Former Ghana Football Association vice-president Fred Pappoe will chair the committee, which has been tasked with identifying and recommending a candidate for the vacant position.

Pappoe will work alongside four other members with backgrounds in football, administration and performance.

They are Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) Secretary General and former Ghana international Anthony Baffoe, lawyer and football administrator Agbesi Dzakpasu, former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah and high-performance specialist Faisal Chibsah.

The GFA said: “This decision was taken following a successful meeting between GFA management and the Ministry on Friday, October 2, 2026, in Accra.”

The committee’s main responsibility will be to assess potential candidates before making a recommendation to the Ghana Football Association.

“In accordance with its mandate, the Committee is tasked with identifying, evaluating, and recommending a suitable candidate for the vacant Black Stars coaching position.”

The position became available after Carlos Queiroz left his role as Ghana coach on Thursday, 1 October, following the September international break.

The Portuguese coach’s departure has prompted the GFA and the ministry to begin the process of finding his replacement.

“The committee is expected to submit its report to the Ghana Football Association. The Black Stars coaching position became vacant on Thursday, October 1, 2026, following the resignation of Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz after the September international break.”

The GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation said the recruitment process would be based on transparency and merit as they look for a coach to lead Ghana in its upcoming competitions.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry wish to assure Ghanaians that a transparent and merit-based process will be implemented to recruit a competent coach to lead the Black Stars in the upcoming competitions.”

The new committee will now oversee the search and evaluation of candidates before submitting its report to the GFA.

Applications have also been opened to interested candidates. Applicants have been asked to submit their application and CV to coaches.applications@ghanafa.org.

The appointment will mark the next stage in Ghana’s preparations following the departure of Queiroz and the vacancy created in the Black Stars coaching position.
