AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Ghana defeat to Gambia very terrible, says Carlos Queiroz

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz has described the Black Stars’ 4-2 defeat to Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as a “terrible” result.

Ghana surrendered a two-goal lead against Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium as their disappointing start to the Group C campaign continued.

“The result was terrible, and myself, the staff, and the players are deeply sad. We have to say sorry to our fans, to our supporters for the result. This was one of those days that everything went wrong, especially in the first half. Conceding two goals in the first half killed the morale of the players and made them nervous. That’s why we were not able to perform well,” the coach told journalists at his pre-match press conference.

Ghana surrender two-goal lead

Ernest Nuamah put Ghana ahead from the penalty spot before Felix Afena-Gyan doubled the advantage with a direct free-kick.

However, Gambia fought back before half-time through Mohamed Badamosi and Omar Colley to level the score.

Ebrima Colley then completed Gambia’s comeback with two second-half goals to hand the Scorpions all three points.

Black Stars suffer second defeat

The defeat leaves Ghana without a point from their opening two matches in Group C after they also lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in their first qualifier.

Gambia, meanwhile, have moved to six points after winning both of their opening matches.

Queiroz and his players will now have to regroup as Ghana look to revive their qualification campaign.
