Ghana’s Black Queens are set for a stern test when they face hosts Morocco in the semi-finals of the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) at the Stade Olympique in Rabat on Tuesday, 22 July.
With a place in the final at stake, the encounter promises high drama between two sides with contrasting recent histories in the competition.
For Ghana, this marks a return to the WAFCON semi-finals for the first time since 2016.
The Black Queens, three-time runners-up, will be aiming to reach the final for the first time in nearly two decades.
After a slow start to the tournament — including a defeat to South Africa and a draw with Mali — Ghana responded with a comprehensive 4–1 win over Tanzania to advance.
Their quarter-final victory came via penalties against Algeria, with goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan the hero, saving two spot kicks to secure progress.
Morocco, meanwhile, are chasing a second consecutive final appearance after finishing runners-up in 2022.
They topped Group A with two wins and a draw, scoring freely and showcasing attacking flair. The Atlas Lionesses have netted 10 goals so far — the most by any team in the competition.
They advanced to the semi-finals with a 3–1 win over Mali, courtesy of a brace from Ibtissam Jraïdi and a late goal from Kenza Chapelle. Captain Ghizlane Chebbak remains a key figure, joint-top scorer with four goals.
The historical edge lies with Morocco, who have won three of the five previous meetings with Ghana, though all have been friendlies.
Their most recent clash was in February 2025, with the hosts securing a narrow 1–0 victory.
Tuesday’s semi-final kicks off at 19:00 GMT at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, where a vibrant home crowd is expected to create an intense atmosphere.
