Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Technical Director, Francis Oti Akenteng, has called on the GFA to implement a clear, structured process for appointing captains for the national teams.
His remarks come amid ongoing controversies surrounding captaincy appointments across Ghana’s national teams. The Black Stars, in particular, have faced challenges in leadership decisions.
Since the beginning of 2024, the team has seen a revolving door of captains. Otto Addo’s decision to omit captain Andre Ayew from the squad continues to spark debate, with Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, and Jordan Ayew all having worn the armband at various points this year.
Similarly, the Black Galaxies, under coach Didi Dramani, reportedly encountered captaincy issues ahead of their 2024 CHAN playoff against Nigeria.
Given the ongoing instability surrounding captaincy appointments, Akenteng believes the GFA must introduce clear guidelines to prevent further complications.
“I think the Ghana Football Association should sit down and come up with a clear criteria for appointing national team captains,” he told Accra-based Asempa FM.
“Usually, when a new coach comes in, he’s unsure whether to retain the old captain or appoint a new one. When this happens, problems arise, even though there may be some existing criteria,” Akenteng added.
