Ghana FA to decide on Carlos Queiroz’s future today

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council members are expected to deliberate on the future of Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz when they meet to review his technical report following Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese tactician, who was appointed in April to replace Otto Addo, led the Black Stars to the global tournament in North America, where Ghana reached the Round of 32 for the first time since their memorable quarter-final appearance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana opened their Group L campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama before holding England to a goalless draw. Although the Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final group game, they advanced to the knockout stage as one of the competition’s best third-placed teams.

Their World Cup journey, however, ended in the Round of 32 after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia.

Following the tournament, Queiroz submitted his technical report to the GFA, which will be scrutinised by the Executive Council during today’s meeting. Beyond assessing the team’s performance, members are also expected to make a decision on whether the 73-year-old will continue as head coach of the senior national team.

Speculation over Queiroz’s future intensified after Ghana’s elimination when a social media post was widely interpreted as a farewell message. However, the experienced coach later dismissed reports of his resignation, explaining in a viral interview that the post was simply intended to express his appreciation to Ghanaians for their unwavering support throughout the World Cup.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has publicly backed Queiroz to remain in charge, expressing confidence that continuity could help Ghana compete for major honours in the coming years.

“I’m sure that if we keep this team, and we persuade the coach Carlos Queiroz to continue to work with the team, by the time of the next AFCON and the next World Cup, we’ll have a team that can claim the championship in either of those two competitions,” Mahama said during an inspection visit to the Ho Sports Stadium.

With the World Cup now behind them, attention will soon shift to qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana have been drawn in a qualifying group alongside Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia and Somalia, with the Black Stars set to begin their campaign in September as they aim to return to the continental tournament after missing out on the previous edition.
