Ghana FA appoints Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars head coach for 2026 FIFA World Cup
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially appointed experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the national team, the Ghana national football team, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision, taken by the Executive Council in collaboration with key stakeholders, marks the beginning of a new era for Ghana as the team prepares for football’s biggest tournament.
A Coach with Elite World Cup Experience
Queiroz arrives with a strong international pedigree, having previously worked with top football nations and clubs including Portugal national football team, Iran national football team, and major European sides such as Real Madrid CF and Manchester United.
His World Cup experience includes guiding South Africa to qualification for the 2002 tournament, leading Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010, and managing Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 editions.
He has also coached in Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar, bringing decades of international experience to Ghana’s technical bench.
Immediate Focus on World Cup Preparation
Queiroz is expected to begin work immediately as preparations intensify for the tournament scheduled to kick off on June 11, 2026.
His appointment is seen as a strategic move aimed at strengthening Ghana’s tactical discipline, tournament experience, and overall competitiveness on the global stage.
Black Stars’ Group Stage Challenge
Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against the Panama national football team on June 17, 2026, in Toronto.
They will then face tough group-stage encounters against England national football team and Croatia national football team in what is expected to be a highly competitive group.
With Queiroz at the helm, Ghana will be aiming to combine experience and structure as they target a strong run in the tournament.
