Brighton & Hove Albion have secured defender Tariq Lamptey on a one-year contract extension, ending speculation over his immediate future.
The 24-year-old right-back was set to become a free agent this summer, attracting reported interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, and recently relegated Leicester City.
However, the Ghana international has opted to remain at the Amex Stadium—at least for now.
The short-term nature of the deal raises questions about Lamptey’s long-term prospects with the Seagulls.
With only a 12-month extension agreed, the coming season could prove decisive in determining whether he remains part of the club’s plans or seeks a fresh challenge elsewhere.
His decision to stay, however, provides Brighton with valuable defensive depth ahead of their Premier League campaign.
Head coach Fabian Hurzeler expressed his satisfaction with Lamptey’s renewal, emphasizing the player’s importance to the squad.
“We’re delighted Tariq is staying with us,” Hurzeler said. “He wants to help the team achieve our targets and gives us great options in wide areas.
“We are looking forward to Tariq being part of our journey next season.”
Lamptey, known for his explosive pace and attacking contributions from full-back, has been a key figure for Brighton since joining from Chelsea in 2020.
Injuries have occasionally disrupted his progress, but when fit, he remains a dynamic presence on the flank. His retention offers Hurzeler tactical flexibility, with the defender capable of playing as a traditional right-back or further forward as a wing-back.
While the extension ensures Brighton avoid losing him for free, the brief commitment suggests both player and club are keeping options open.
Should Lamptey excel in the upcoming campaign, he could either earn a longer-term deal or command a significant transfer fee next summer.
