Ghana defender Rufai Mohammed joins Venezia on loan from IF Elfsborg

Ghana defender Rufai Mohammed has completed a move to Serie A side Venezia FC, joining from Swedish top-flight club IF Elfsborg on a loan deal until the end of the current European season.

The agreement includes an option for Venezia to make the transfer permanent, giving the Italian club the opportunity to secure the 20-year-old’s services beyond his initial loan spell.

Mohammed’s move represents a significant step forward in his young career after making his breakthrough in European football with Elfsborg. He originally joined the Swedish club from Accra-based Inter Allies FC in March 2024.

The towering defender, who stands at 1.98 metres, spent part of the following season on loan at IFK Värnamo, where he made 16 appearances and scored twice in the Swedish top flight.

After returning to Elfsborg, Mohammed established himself further, making 18 appearances in the current campaign while contributing one goal and one assist. He also scored once in one appearance in the Svenska Cupen.

Despite recently extending his Elfsborg contract until December 2029, Mohammed has now taken up the opportunity to test himself in Italy’s top division.

His move to Venezia gives the former Ghana Under-17 international an opportunity to showcase his physical and defensive qualities against some of Europe’s leading attackers.

Mohammed is regarded as a strong aerial defender who is comfortable with the ball and capable of contributing to build-up play.

The Ghanaian will now look to adapt quickly to Serie A as Venezia seek greater defensive stability during the remainder of the season.
