Ghana defender Abdul Mumin explains why Girona project convinced him to join

Ghana defender Abdul Mumin says Girona’s attractive style of football and ambitious project were key factors behind his decision to join the Spanish club ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 28-year-old centre-back completed a free transfer to Girona on a three-season contract after leaving Rayo Vallecano, where he gained valuable experience in LaLiga.

Mumin believes Girona’s development in recent years makes the club an ideal destination for players looking to improve their careers.

“The main thing that attracted me to Girona, I think, is the club itself. Girona, I think, is a club with a lot of history and over the past years, the type of football they play has been very attractive.”

The Ghana international also sees the move as an opportunity to continue developing at a club whose footballing philosophy appeals to him.

“I believe that for all footballers that want to improve in their professional career, it’s a project that they will look up to.”

Mumin joins Girona after spending four years in Spain, having previously represented Rayo Vallecano following spells with FC Nordsjælland in Denmark and Vitória Guimarães in Portugal.

He brings significant top-flight experience to Girona’s defence, having made more than 60 official appearances for Rayo.

The 1.88-metre defender also featured for Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after making his senior international debut in June 2024.

Girona will hope Mumin’s experience and physical presence strengthen their defensive options for the new campaign.
