Ghana commits 150m cedis to Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup preparations
Ghana has committed about 150 million cedis — more than $13m — to fund the Black Stars’ preparations for the 2026 World Cup, according to the chairman of parliament’s sports committee.
Ernest Norgbey said the allocation is intended to ensure the national side has the necessary conditions to prepare effectively for the tournament, which will be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Black Stars are set to make their fifth appearance at the World Cup and have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.
Their campaign will begin on 17 June 2026 against Panama, before further group matches against England on 23 June and Croatia on 27 June.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Mr Norgbey confirmed the scale of the financial commitment.
“Regarding funding, the government has allocated approximately 150 million cedis for preparations at this time ,” he said.
He indicated that while FIFA is expected to provide financial support, those funds will not be released early enough to meet the team’s immediate needs ahead of the tournament.
“We still need funding, because we know that FIFA will pay us a certain amount, but this money will not be available until the start of preparations ,” he explained.
Although a detailed breakdown of how the money will be spent has not been made public, preparations are already taking shape.
Ghana are scheduled to face Germany and Austria during the next international window as part of their build-up to the competition.
The investment underlines the scale of expectation surrounding the national side as they prepare to compete on football’s biggest stage once again.
With the group stage fixtures confirmed and friendly matches lined up, attention now turns to how effectively the resources allocated will translate into performance when the tournament begins next summer.
