Ghana women’s national team coach Kim Lars Björkegren has expressed optimism about the future following his first training camp with the Black Queens.
The Swedish manager, who was appointed on February 14, 2025, spent 10 days with the squad in Morocco as he began preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The training camp provided Björkegren with his first opportunity to assess the team and implement his tactical ideas.
While not everything went according to plan, he remained encouraged by the players’ commitment and attitude throughout the sessions.
Mixed results but positive signs
The Black Queens had scheduled two matches during their time in Morocco.
Their first encounter, a friendly against the Moroccan women’s national team, ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat.
The second match, which was set to be against a team from Raja Casablanca, was ultimately canceled.
Despite these setbacks, Björkegren remained upbeat about the experience and what it revealed about his squad.
I am surprised, in a good way, to see how attentive they are and how much they really want to do their best for this group, Björkegren said.
I feel like we are moving in the right direction. I am sure the next training camp will be even better, and I am already looking forward to it.
Looking ahead to AFCON 2025
With the Women’s AFCON set to kick off on July 5, 2025, in Morocco, Björkegren still has two international windows—April and June—to continue shaping his team.
Ghana has been drawn into Group C, where they will face defending champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania in what promises to be a highly competitive group stage.
As he continues to familiarize himself with the squad, Björkegren will be looking to refine tactics, build chemistry, and ensure the Black Queens are fully prepared for the tournament.
The Swedish coach has a track record of success in women’s football, and Ghanaian fans will be hoping his expertise can help the team make a strong impact at AFCON 2025.
