Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz wants to build a stable Black Stars squad

Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has set sights on building a stable Black Stars squad as the team gears up for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against The Gambia.

The West African giants suffered a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in their opening fixture of the qualifying campaign, leaving the Black Stars under pressure to secure maximum points against The Gambia on home soil.

The Black Stars will play host to The Gambia on Tuesday at the Accra Sports Stadium, with Carlos Queiroz and his charges looking to revive their qualification hopes after Ghana missed out on the previous edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Ahead of the crucial encounter, the experienced Portuguese tactician has called for greater stability within the Black Stars, arguing that constant changes to the squad can hinder the team’s progress.

“We cannot change 7, 8, 9, 10 players every single call-up because every time we change the players, we have to start from zero,” Queiroz said.

 “So let’s imagine you order me as an engineer to build one building with six floors. So first week I have some workers, we go to first floor, then we change all the workers, the first floor goes down, we start from ground zero.

“Next week ground zero, next week ground zero again, next week ground zero. This is the problem, one of the problems of the national team,” he said.

Queiroz’s comments underline his desire to build a more settled Black Stars squad, with the coach insisting that constant changes make it difficult for the team to move forward and develop the cohesion needed to compete at the highest level.

The Black Stars will now hope to put his philosophy into practice when they face The Gambia on Tuesday, with a positive result crucial to their hopes of recovering from the setback against Ivory Coast.
