Ghana captain Andre Ayew has set his sight on a goalscoring record at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which is set to start in a week time in Ivory Coast.
Ayew, who recently joined Le Havre in the French Ligue 1, has set a target of becoming the first player to score in seven AFCON tournaments.
Compatriot Asamoah Gyan, Zambia legend Kalusha Bwalya, and record all-time scorer Samuel Eto’o are the only players to have scored in six tournaments.
Having scored in six editions already, a goal at AFCON 2023 by Ayew will see him set a new record in the history of the tournament.
“My priority is to start or come off the bench in Ivory Coast,” Ayew told reporters.
“After that, let’s see what will happen. What is most important is that Ghana will do well in this competition as we had a bad 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, going out of the first round.”
Aside from the scoring record, the Black Stars skipper will equal appearances of Ahmed Hassan, former Egypt captain and Rigobert Song, with 8 appearances at the continental showpiece.
Ayew has featured in all the AFCON tournaments between 2008 and 2021, with the exception of 2013 in South Africa, where he was not a member of the squad.
The 33-year-old will be appearing in the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast alongside his younger brother Jordan Ayew.
The Black Stars will be meeting Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique in Group B of AFCON 2023.
