Ghana Players Defend Bonuses Amid Criticism Before AFCON Qualifiers
Ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Uganda, Ghanaian players addressed recent criticisms about the large bonuses they received after the 2014 World Cup.
-
André Ayew emphasized the players’ commitment and hard work, insisting the bonuses are well-deserved. He highlighted that many players give back to the community quietly, often through charity, beyond what is publicly known.
-
Ayew also pointed out that the players reinvest their earnings in Ghana, buying land and supporting their families, ensuring the money stays in the country.
Supporting this, Asamoah Gyan, the team captain, explained the broader responsibilities African players carry. He contrasted African family structures with European ones, explaining that his business in Ghana employs 200 workers and contributes significantly in taxes. Gyan also mentioned the substantial customs fees paid when importing cars, showing the financial impact the players have on the local economy.
