Ashanti Gold Clinch First Ghana Premier League Title in 19 Years
Ashanti Gold have been crowned champions of the Ghana Premier League for the first time since 1996, securing the title with a 1-0 win over WAFA on Sunday.
The Obuasi-based club sealed their fourth league crown on Matchday 29, the penultimate round of the season, ending a 19-year wait for domestic glory. Their previous three consecutive titles came during a golden era in the mid-1990s, when they were known as Goldfields.
Sunday’s narrow victory, combined with Aduana Stars’ goalless draw against Edubiase FC, ensured that Ashanti Gold built an unassailable six-point lead at the top of the table, with just one match remaining.
The title win sparked jubilant celebrations in Obuasi, where fans and former players hailed the club’s return to the summit of Ghanaian football. One former Ashanti Gold player offered his congratulations following confirmation of the championship, reflecting on the club’s long journey back to prominence.
Ashanti Gold’s success this season has been built on defensive solidity, tactical consistency, and a string of crucial wins, particularly in the final stages of the campaign.
With the title now secured, Ashanti Gold will go on to represent Ghana in the CAF Champions League, where they will hope to make a strong impression on the continental stage.
