Ghana football legend Michael Essien has called out former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, labelling him “naïve” for his controversial comments about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Carragher sparked backlash after suggesting that AFCON was not a “major tournament” while analyzing Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the 2025 Ballon d’Or.
He argued that Salah’s bid for the prestigious award could be impacted because he was “not playing in a major tournament,” despite his impressive performances for Liverpool.
Speaking on Sporty FM, Essien commended African football legends for challenging Carragher’s remarks, emphasizing the significance of AFCON.
“Jamie Carragher was naïve and ignorant in his comments about AFCON and African football,” Essien, who is also a Chelsea legend said.
“Some of my African football have dealt with him so I am ok but he was just naïve to make those comments about African football,” he added.
Following the criticism, Carragher later clarified his comments during an appearance on CBS.
