André Ayew has been named captain of Ghana for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, a decision made by Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah. The Fenerbahçe midfielder takes over the armband from Asamoah Gyan, who initially announced his international retirement last Monday after learning he would not serve as captain for the tournament.

Although Gyan, 33, and holder of 106 caps, later reversed his retirement at the “presidential request,” Appiah has confirmed he will not appoint him as captain. Instead, the Ghana Football Association has honored Gyan with the title of “general captain,” acknowledging his experience and leadership without assigning him the official armband.

Ghana has been drawn into Group F for the 2019 AFCON, where they will face Cameroon, Benin, and Guinea-Bissau. André Ayew’s leadership will be pivotal as the Black Stars aim to advance from the group stage and make a deep run in the tournament.
