Ghana talent Abdul Fatawu Issahaku signs for Premier League side Ipswich Town

Ghana international winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku has completed a move to Ipswich Town from Leicester City, signing a five-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2031.

The Premier League side confirmed the arrival of the 22-year-old attacker for an undisclosed fee as manager Gary O’Neil continues to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season.

World Cup experience boosts Ipswich attack

Fatawu joins Ipswich after an impressive campaign that included representing Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The winger featured in all four of the Black Stars’ matches at the tournament, including their group-stage encounter against England, and has now earned 32 senior caps for Ghana, scoring three goals.

His arrival gives Ipswich an attacking player with experience at both international and European level, having previously featured in the UEFA Champions League during his time with Portuguese club Sporting.

Five-year deal completed

After completing his move, Fatawu expressed his excitement about beginning a new chapter with Ipswich.

“I am proud to have signed for Ipswich Town,” Abdul said.

“The ambition the club has is very exciting and I’m looking forward to being a part of that as we prepare for the Premier League season. After speaking to the manager (Gary O’Neil), I know what the expectation is and I’m looking forward to meeting my teammates and starting work.

“I have played against Ipswich a few times during my time in England and I know how passionate the supporters are for the club, so I’m excited to play for them and show them what I can do.”

The Ghanaian will join his new teammates at Ipswich’s pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain, as preparations continue for the Premier League campaign.

O’Neil praises Ghana winger’s qualities

Ipswich manager Gary O’Neil believes Fatawu’s technical ability and physical attributes will add valuable options to his squad.

“Abdul is a young player who has already gained good experience in the game and we’re excited to have him with us.

“He has strong physical and technical attributes, is comfortable on the ball and can test the opposition in one-on-one situations, so will provide us with good options within the squad.

“Having represented his country at the World Cup this summer, I know he is now looking forward to getting to work ahead of the Premier League season.”

From Tamale to the Premier League

Born in Tamale, Ghana, Fatawu began his football journey with local club Steadfast before earning a loan move to Ghana Premier Division side Dreams FC in 2021.

His performances attracted European interest, leading to a move to Sporting in Portugal in 2022, where he gained Champions League experience.

He later joined Leicester City on loan during the 2023/24 season and played an important role as the Foxes secured promotion to the Premier League alongside Ipswich, winning the club’s Young Player of the Year award.

After making 11 Premier League appearances during an injury-affected 2024/25 campaign, Fatawu enjoyed a productive season last term, scoring nine goals in 44 appearances for Leicester.

Black Stars winger continues rise

Fatawu has also enjoyed success on the international stage.

He was named Player of the Tournament when Ghana won the U20 Africa Cup of Nations in March 2021 before making his senior debut later that year.

The winger was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he made one appearance, before becoming a key figure for the Black Stars at the latest global tournament.

His move to Ipswich marks another major step in the career of one of Ghana’s most highly rated young attacking talents.
