Gervinho’s Move to Al Jazira Collapses Over ‘Obscene’ Contract Demands
Ivorian forward Gervinho will not be joining Al Jazira after negotiations between the Qatari club and the AS Roma player broke down due to what the club described as “obscene” contractual demands.
The transfer had appeared to be nearing completion, with Roma reportedly ready to let the 28-year-old leave for around €13 million. However, talks abruptly collapsed, with Al Jazira releasing a statement criticising the nature of Gervinho’s requests.
“On the road to the agreement, we hit an impenetrable wall due to the player’s excessive contractual demands. The transfer fell through after he started making obscene demands,” the club said in a strongly worded statement.
According to reports in Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sport, Gervinho’s demands allegedly included a private helicopter, a luxury house for his family, and exclusive access to a private beach as part of his contract terms — requests that Al Jazira found unacceptable.
The breakdown in talks means Gervinho is now likely to remain at Roma for the upcoming season, despite the club being open to his departure. The former Arsenal and Lille winger joined the Serie A side in 2013 and enjoyed a strong start under then-manager Rudi Garcia, but his form has since been inconsistent.
Roma, who are reshaping their squad ahead of the new campaign, had reportedly agreed on a fee with Al Jazira before negotiations with the player fell apart.
For now, Gervinho remains under contract in the Italian capital — though his long-term future at the Stadio Olimpico remains uncertain.
