Gernot Rohr Appointed New Coach of Burkina Faso
Gernot Rohr has been named the new head coach of Burkina Faso, although his contract has yet to be signed. The French coach, who has already begun his duties, sat down for an exclusive interview with Footafrica365 to discuss his objectives for the Stallions.
Rohr, who attended the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in January and watched Burkina Faso’s performances, including their match against Gabon, has outlined his primary goals: “The objective is to qualify the Stallions for these two events,” Rohr said, referring to upcoming continental tournaments. “Beyond that, it’s about revitalizing the team, and making some adjustments. I was present at the CAN, I saw them play, and I shared my ideas on what to do and how to do it.”
The 61-year-old coach revealed the circumstances of his appointment, explaining that he was in Niamey for the U17 AFCON when he received the call from the Burkina Faso Football Federation (FBF). “I was in Niamey for the cadet CAN, and they called me. I arrived there on Sunday, for a meeting on Monday. On Tuesday, I left again, heading for Niamey, from where I returned to France today. They told me by telephone yesterday (Tuesday) that I had been chosen,” Rohr said.
To succeed in his mission, Rohr plans to build on the work done by his predecessors. “They asked me if I could bring new skills, and I think they need a goalkeeping coach in particular,” he noted. “I know the DTN (National Technical Director), who has done some interesting analyses, especially in terms of observing opposing teams. I will make proposals to make the best use of everyone’s expertise.”
Rohr’s appointment marks the start of a new chapter for Burkina Faso as they aim to build on their previous successes and qualify for upcoming tournaments.
