The chairman of the board of directors of Bayern Munich, Uli Hoeness, has been handed a harsh lesson in accountability as he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for tax evasion. The prosecution had initially requested a longer sentence of five years and six months for Hoeness, who was found guilty of evading taxes amounting to 27.2 million euros.
This verdict marks a significant downfall for the once all-powerful figure in German football. Hoeness and his legal team now have one week to appeal the judgment.
Hoeness’s conviction adds to a growing list of senior football executives facing legal consequences, following the seven-year prison sentence of former Sevilla FC president José Maria Del Nido.
