Germany honours Ghana’s Gerald Asamoah with 'Federal Cross of Merit' award

Former Ghanaian-born German international Gerald Asamoah has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit by the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to strengthening relations between Ghana and Germany.

The award ceremony took place in Accra, where President Steinmeier personally presented the honour during his official trip to Africa.

Describing Asamoah as a “bridge builder between Ghana and Germany,” Steinmeier praised the former Schalke 04 and Hannover 96 striker for his enduring commitment to fostering friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

Asamoah’s humanitarian work also received special recognition. Through his Gerald Asamoah Foundation for Children with Heart Disease, established in 2007, he has helped bring German medical professionals to Ghana to provide life-saving treatment for children suffering from heart conditions.

Beyond his work in Ghana, Asamoah continues to play an active role in promoting social causes in Germany, notably serving as an ambassador for the “School Without Racism” project.

Visibly emotional upon receiving the honour, Asamoah expressed gratitude for the recognition.

“That I’m receiving something like this, I still can’t believe it. But it’s pure joy,” he said. “When God blesses someone, you have to try to give something back.”

The award marks yet another milestone in the life of a man whose impact extends far beyond the football pitch.

Since his retirement, he has impacted lives not only in Germany but in Ghana as well.
