Germany held by Greece as Jurgen Klopp’s arrival fails to end Nations League struggles

Germany’s difficult Nations League campaign continued with another goalless draw against Greece, leaving the side with only one victory from four matches despite the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as head coach following the World Cup finals.

The result saw Germany drop two more points against the same opposition. They had already been beaten 1-0 by Greece in the second round, and the latest failure to win added to the growing questions surrounding the team’s form.

Germany began this edition of the Nations League with a 1-1 draw against Netherlands in the opening round. Their only victory came in the previous match, when they defeated Serbia 2-0.

That leaves Germany with one win, two draws and one defeat from their current campaign. The repeated loss of points has prevented the team from building momentum in a competition where they had hoped to re-establish stability and return strongly to the contest under Klopp.

The goalless draw against Greece was therefore another setback rather than an isolated result. Germany were unable to turn their latest opportunity into a victory, despite facing an opponent they had already met earlier in the tournament.

Expectations had increased among German supporters when Klopp took charge. His experience and reputation for building competitive teams had led to hopes that the managerial change would bring a clear improvement to the national side.

The performances so far, however, have not reflected the transformation many expected. Germany continue to struggle both to collect victories and to maintain a consistent level from one match to the next.

The results have also limited the benefit of their 2-0 win over Serbia. Rather than using that success as the start of a stronger run, Germany followed it with another draw, leaving their overall record unchanged at one win, two draws and one defeat.

The latest stalemate is likely to increase pressure on Klopp and his players, who missed another chance to improve their position in the group. They must now respond quickly in the matches ahead if they are to finish their Nations League campaign in better fashion.

Germany will also need to produce a different overall performance from the one seen so far. The arrival of a new coach has not yet ended the team’s recent difficulties, and the side remains short of the consistency required to challenge more effectively.
