n 2023, doctors believed Georges Minoungou’s career was over. A severe infection in his left eye led to complete optic nerve damage, leaving him permanently blind on that side. At just 21, the winger was told he would never play again. But Minoungou refused to accept retirement.
Born in Batiebly-Douibly, Ivory Coast, in July 2002, Minoungou chose to represent Burkina Faso internationally.
His early career took him to Europe, where he played for MFK Vyškov in the Czech Republic, before moving to the United States to join Tacoma Defiance, the reserve side of Seattle Sounders. In 2024, he broke into the Sounders’ first team, making his debut against LA Galaxy.
The eye injury occurred during a training camp in Marbella, Spain. What was first thought to be an allergy or insect bite quickly worsened. Within two weeks, his eye turned completely white.
Surgery confirmed the worst: total vision loss. “We did five or six MRI scans without answers. I cried every night, praying to God,” he recalled.
Despite medical advice to quit football, Minoungou insisted on continuing. He trained with protective glasses and adapted his style, working on positioning, balance, and peripheral awareness. His persistence paid off.
In October 2024, he scored his first MLS goal against Vancouver. Months later, he helped Seattle win the 2025 Leagues Cup, defeating Inter Miami led by Lionel Messi. He also featured in the FIFA Club World Cup, proving he could compete at the highest level.
At AFCON 2025 in Morocco, Minoungou became a symbol of resilience. In Burkina Faso’s opening match against Equatorial Guinea, he came on late and scored a late equalizer in the 95th minute, sparking a comeback that ended with Edmond Tapsoba’s winner.
He later featured against Algeria, keeping his team in contention for the knockout rounds.
Now 23, Minoungou is rewriting his destiny. From being told his career was finished to scoring at AFCON, his story is a living testimony to determination and belief.
He has shown that even with one eye, passion and hard work can overcome the toughest obstacles.
