George Ilenikhena scores on Nigeria debut after bright start with Al-Ittihad

George Ilenikhena continued his impressive form for the 2026-27 season by scoring on his first appearance for Nigeria, helping the Super Eagles beat Madagascar 2-1 in the opening round of 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying on Friday.

The Al-Ittihad striker was handed a starting place for his first official call-up to the Nigeria squad and made an immediate impact. He opened the scoring in the first minute of added time at the end of the first half, cutting in from the edge of the penalty area before finding the net with a left-footed shot.

Ilenikhena’s goal extended the strong run he has enjoyed since the beginning of the campaign with Al-Ittihad. The 20-year-old has featured in nine matches for the Saudi club this season, scoring six goals and providing two assists.

His progress comes after a summer in which his future at Al-Ittihad was uncertain. Several European clubs attempted to sign him during the most recent summer transfer window, but he remained with the Jeddah side.

Ilenikhena joined Al-Ittihad from French club Monaco in January. Since arriving in Jeddah, he has made 15 appearances for the club, scoring six goals and creating two more.
