Gavin Hunt extends Stellenbosch FC contract ahead of 2026/27 season

Stellenbosch FC have confirmed that head coach Gavin Hunt has signed a contract extension ahead of the 2026/27 season, rewarding his impact since taking charge of the Betway Premiership side.

Hunt was appointed in December 2025, stepping in to replace long-serving former coach Steve Barker, who left to join the Simba SC project in Tanzania.

At the time of his arrival, Stellenbosch were in a difficult position, sitting 14th in the table and facing a potential relegation battle. However, Hunt guided the team to a significant improvement, finishing the season in ninth place with 37 points.

During his first spell in charge, he oversaw 22 matches in all competitions, recording seven wins, seven defeats and eight draws as he stabilised results and improved performances.

Despite narrowly missing out on a top-eight finish by just two points, the club’s leadership have moved to secure his future as they look ahead to the new campaign.

In previous seasons under Barker, Stellenbosch enjoyed strong domestic and continental success, finishing third in both the 2023/24 and 2024/25 Betway Premiership campaigns, which secured consecutive qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.

Hunt’s task now is to build on that foundation and return the club to continental competition while also pushing for improved results in domestic tournaments.

The former SuperSport United coach will also have the opportunity to reshape the squad during the upcoming transfer window, with expectations that further reinforcements could strengthen the team’s push up the table.

Club officials are hopeful that continuity under Hunt will help Stellenbosch regain the level of consistency that previously brought them success on both domestic and African stages.

Attention will now turn to how the experienced coach adapts the squad ahead of his first full season in charge, with ambitions of returning Stellenbosch to continental football firmly in focus.
