Gamphani Lungu hails ‘bittersweet’ hat-trick despite historic 11-goal thriller against Sundowns
Siwelele FC forward Gamphani Lungu has expressed pride in scoring a rare hat-trick against Mamelodi Sundowns, even as his side endured a heavy defeat in a record-breaking encounter in the Betway Premiership.
Siwelele FC and Sundowns delivered a match for the history books, combining for the highest-scoring league game ever, a dramatic 11-goal spectacle that ended 7-4 in favour of the title contenders.
While the result went against the Mangaung-based outfit, Lungu stood out with a remarkable individual display, netting three goals against one of the continent’s strongest sides.
Reflecting on the performance, the Zambian forward admitted mixed emotions.
“It feels bittersweet because we lost by a heavy score. But I feel really good,” he told Zambian outlet BolaNews.
“Not a lot of people can say they have scored a hat-trick vs Sundowns. And by the grace of God, I can.”
The 27-year-old also addressed his international ambitions, keeping his focus measured when asked about a potential return to the Zambia national team.
“That would be great and all. But in all honesty, God’s plan and timing is the best.”
Looking ahead to the new campaign, Lungu outlined his personal objectives, emphasizing consistency and greater influence on Siwelele’s attacking output.
“Just to contribute more to the team success from the beginning of the season and obviously score more goals and assists,” he said.
