The Gambia is bolstering the technical staff of its national football team with strategic appointments following the hiring of Northern Irish coach Johnathan McKinstry. One notable addition to McKinstry’s team is expected to be former Gambian international Abdou Jammeh.

Johnathan McKinstry, who recently arrived in Banjul, is set to be officially presented as the new head coach of the Gambia Scorpions on Monday.

The 38-year-old coach will sign a two-year contract, succeeding Tom Saintfiet. McKinstry, known for his recent success with Gor Mahia in Kenya, is anticipated to announce his full technical staff soon after his appointment.

Local press reports suggest that Abdou Jammeh, a former captain of the Scorpions and holder of a UEFA Pro license, is poised to join McKinstry’s staff as an assistant coach.

Jammeh, who previously led the national under-23 team, was considered a candidate for the head coach position before the Gambian Football Federation (GFF) selected McKinstry.

His inclusion in the technical staff marks a significant step in his coaching career, bringing his extensive experience and leadership skills to the national team setup.

The new coaching team faces a challenging task ahead, with the Gambia set to compete in Group F of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Scorpions will vie for a spot in the prestigious tournament against formidable opponents such as Kenya, Ivory Coast, Burundi, Gabon, and Seychelles.

The qualifiers kick off with the Gambia hosting Seychelles on June 3, followed by an away match against Gabon on June 10.

McKinstry’s appointment follows his successful stint in Kenya, where he led Gor Mahia to a Premier League title.

His proven track record and fresh approach are expected to invigorate the Gambia national team. Jammeh’s familiarity with the team and his leadership on and off the field will be invaluable as they prepare for the upcoming qualifiers.

The GFF’s strategic moves in solidifying the technical staff underscore their commitment to advancing Gambian football on the international stage.

As McKinstry and Jammeh join forces, fans and stakeholders alike are hopeful for a successful World Cup qualifying campaign, aiming to propel the Scorpions to new heights.
