Galatasaray are competing with Trabzonspor to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana on a permanent transfer during next summer’s transfer window.
The Cameroon international is currently on loan at Trabzonspor, where he has begun to rebuild his career after a difficult spell at Manchester United that included a number of costly errors.
According to Sports Mole, Trabzonspor face strong competition from Galatasaray, who are prepared to offer more money to secure Onana’s permanent move.
Trabzonspor want to sign the 30-year-old for less than 10m euros, equivalent to £8.38m, but Galatasaray are willing to go beyond that figure. Manchester United are not prepared to sell Onana for the amount Trabzonspor currently intend to pay.
Onana has made 46 appearances for the Turkish club, keeping 11 clean sheets and conceding 55 goals. His form has improved to some extent since moving to Turkey, and he has helped Trabzonspor remain in contention for the league title.
Trabzonspor are also competing for the Conference League this season. However, it is not certain that Onana will receive financially better offers elsewhere in the next stage of his career.
The former Ajax and Inter Milan goalkeeper is understood to be taking time before deciding what comes next. His Manchester United contract runs until the end of next season, giving the club another decision to make over his future.
Onana joined Manchester United after establishing himself at Ajax and Inter Milan, but his time at Old Trafford was affected by several mistakes. His loan spell at Trabzonspor has given him an opportunity to regain consistency while helping the club challenge for honours in Turkey and Europe.
Manchester United’s immediate focus is on the future of Michael Carrick, who oversaw the side’s 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon.
Even if the English manager is replaced by one of the candidates being considered for the role, United’s hierarchy will still face several decisions during the winter transfer window. Onana’s position will be among the issues to be addressed, particularly with Galatasaray now ready to make a stronger financial commitment than Trabzonspor.
For now, Onana’s preference is to wait before choosing his next destination. Any permanent move will also depend on Manchester United receiving an offer that matches their valuation, rather than the lower fee proposed by Trabzonspor.
