Gabriel Jesus arrives in Spain for Barcelona medical

Gabriel Jesus has arrived in Spain to undergo a medical ahead of his proposed move from Arsenal to Barcelona.

The Brazil forward was filmed arriving at the airport, with Spanish newspaper Sport reporting that his medical is scheduled for Monday. His presentation as a Barcelona player is expected to take place on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Barcelona will pay Arsenal an initial €10m for the 29-year-old, with a further €5m available in add-ons. Jesus is expected to sign a two-year contract with the option of extending it for another season.

He is also expected to attend Barcelona’s La Liga match against Rayo Vallecano at Camp Nou on Monday evening, potentially giving supporters their first sight of their new signing before his formal presentation.

Bojan Krkic, Barcelona’s head of scouting, believes the move could provide Jesus with a significant opportunity to revive his career, although he said the player carries the greater risk in the agreement.

“I believed in him a lot, and my reports on him were very positive,” Bojan told Sport. “I went to watch him twice when he was at Manchester City, at a time when there was talk of him leaving, before he moved to Arsenal. I was not the only one who went to watch him.”

He added: “The person taking the risk here is Gabriel Jesus, not Barcelona to the same extent. He has an opportunity to revive himself and must make the most of it.”

Bojan concluded: “It is a golden opportunity for him. He has the mentality required, and he is a strong and aggressive player when he plays. He has a change of pace and quality in finishing attacks, so signing him could be a great success for the club.”

Barcelona see Jesus as a suitable candidate to fill the number nine position following the departure of Robert Lewandowski. The club are targeting an established centre-forward who can lead the attack in the coming period.

Napoli had also negotiated with Arsenal earlier this summer over a move for Jesus. However, those talks ended after Arsenal insisted on receiving €20m for the forward.

Jesus joined Arsenal from Manchester City in 2022. He made 14 appearances for the club last season, scoring three goals.

In total, the Brazil international has played 123 matches for Arsenal, scoring 32 goals and providing 22 assists.

His proposed move to Barcelona would therefore bring an end to his time in north London after four years and give him the chance to take on a new role in a Barcelona attack looking for a successor to Lewandowski.
