Gabon has strengthened the structure of its national team by appointing Pierre Aubameyang as the new general manager of the Panthers. The former international steps into the role to support head coach Patrice Neveu and complete the technical staff as the team prepares for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The position had remained vacant for more than a year following Daniel Cousin’s promotion to the role of national team coach, leaving a gap in the organization’s leadership framework. With the qualifiers approaching and expectations high, the Gabonese Football Federation decided it was time to reinforce the administrative and sporting management around the squad. The appointment of Pierre Aubameyang is seen as both a strategic and symbolic choice, given his deep roots in Gabonese football and his long-standing involvement with the national setup.

Well known as the father of international star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the former striker and captain of Gabon, Pierre Aubameyang brings valuable experience and familiarity with the team’s environment. However, his selection is based on far more than family ties. A former Gabonese international himself, Aubameyang enjoyed a solid playing career and later moved into coaching, building a strong reputation within the country’s football circles.

Before taking on his new responsibilities, he served as coach of the local Panthers national team, working closely with home-based players and helping develop domestic talent. That experience has given him a thorough understanding of the local football landscape, which could prove essential in strengthening the link between grassroots development and the senior national side. His knowledge of both players and the federation’s structure is expected to ease communication and improve overall organization.

As general manager, Aubameyang’s mission will be to provide support behind the scenes, ensuring that the technical staff and players can focus fully on their performances. His role will involve coordinating logistics, maintaining cohesion within the group, and acting as a bridge between the federation, coaching staff, and squad members. Having someone with international experience and a deep connection to Gabonese football could help foster unity and stability during a crucial period.

The Panthers now turn their attention to the start of their AFCON 2021 qualifiers, where they will face a tough opening challenge against the Democratic Republic of Congo. The match promises to be demanding, and Gabon will need both strong leadership and solid preparation to secure a positive result. Aubameyang’s arrival comes at an important moment, as the team seeks to rebuild momentum and reestablish itself among the continent’s competitive sides.

With a new structure in place and fresh energy surrounding the squad, Gabon hopes this appointment will mark the beginning of a more organized and successful chapter. Pierre Aubameyang’s experience, commitment, and understanding of the national team’s identity could prove instrumental as the Panthers aim to make their mark in the upcoming qualification campaign.
