Mario Lemina Hesitates Between France and Gabon Ahead of CAN 2015
Mario Lemina, the talented midfielder with dual French and Gabonese nationality, is at a crossroads regarding his international future. While he currently represents France’s U21 team, a recent visit by Gabon’s coach Jorge Costa and national team manager Daniel Cousin may be shifting the balance.
Born in Libreville, Gabon, Lemina, 21, has not closed the door on the Panthers. In an interview with RMC, he clarified:
“For the moment, my wish is to play for the French team. But I haven’t said no to Gabon either. It will depend on a lot of things, family… But for now, I’m giving everything for France, I want to go back with the Espoirs.”
Yet with the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) fast approaching and Togo (Alaixys Romao’s national team) missing out on qualification, there may be a vacuum of opportunities that Gabon can offer Lemina—especially in terms of valuable playing time during the January–February tournament window.
According to Foot Africa 365 and journalist Nabil Djellit, Gabon is actively pushing to convince Lemina to switch allegiances in time for CAN 2015.
Whether he continues with the French setup or accepts the call of his birth country, Mario Lemina’s decision could significantly impact his career and Gabon’s midfield for years to come.
