Gabon: Human Rights Foundation Criticizes Messi

Controversy Surrounds Lionel Messi’s Visit to Gabon Amid Human Rights Criticism

Lionel Messi’s recent visit to Gabon continues to spark intense backlash, with the Human Rights Foundation (HRF) issuing a sharp condemnation of the FC Barcelona star’s involvement in what it describes as a public relations effort for the Bongo regime.

In a strongly worded statement, the HRF criticized Messi for damaging the credibility of his foundation, which advocates for children’s rights. “Messi claims to support children’s rights and serves as a UNICEF ambassador for youth education, yet he has aligned himself with a corrupt regime accused of ignoring investigations into the ritual murder of children in Gabon,” the organization stated.

The Argentine star’s brief trip—made two weeks earlier—was reportedly part of a publicity campaign to promote Gabon’s preparations for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His presence at events led by President Ali Bongo Ondimba has drawn ire due to the country’s political climate and socioeconomic conditions.

The HRF also highlighted that 20% of the population lives on less than €2 per day, raising questions about the morality of hosting such costly events while basic needs go unmet. The controversy deepened with reports—though unconfirmed—that the Gabonese presidency allegedly paid Messi €3.5 million for his visit, further inflaming criticism.

Messi has not issued any public statement addressing the allegations or the reported payment. The episode has triggered broader discussions about the role of high-profile athletes in global political and humanitarian contexts, especially when visiting countries with poor human rights records.
