Gabon coach Thierry Mouyouma embraces underdog role but remains confident against Nigeria
Gabon national team coach Thierry Mouyouma has acknowledged that his squad will enter the World Cup playoffs as underdogs against Nigeria.
However, Mouyouma insists the team is not intimidated by the Super Eagles’ reputation and attacking strength.
“We know that Nigeria, a great African team, is the favourite, and our underdog status suits us just fine. Nigeria will be under more pressure, which is understandable. But while we respect them for everything they represent, we’re not afraid of them,” Mouyouma told Afrik Foot.
He pointed out the quality and threat posed by players like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman but remains confident Gabon’s squad is ready for the challenge. “We know the quality of their squad, the dangers posed by Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman. And I think Nigeria knows us very well.”
Gabon hasn’t beaten Nigeria since a World Cup qualifier back in June 1989 but hopes history will change this week. Other teams in the playoffs include Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo, both aiming for a spot in the next round. The stage is set for a dramatic contest with Gabon determined not to be ruled out.
