Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang injured

Deportivo La Coruna have suffered a major setback with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ruled out after suffering a serious meniscus injury in his right knee.

The Gabon international picked up the injury during Deportivo’s La Liga meeting with Real Betis last weekend and is now set to undergo surgery on Thursday, September 24.

Aubameyang initially underwent an MRI scan on Monday before travelling to Madrid for further assessment. The additional examinations confirmed damage to the meniscus in his right knee, leaving the experienced striker facing a spell on the sidelines.

The setback comes at a particularly frustrating time for the 37-year-old, who had made an explosive start to life back in Spanish football following his summer move from Marseille.

Aubameyang has quickly become an important attacking figure for Deportivo, finding the net consistently since the beginning of the campaign.

He has scored five goals and provided two assists in seven La Liga appearances, while his scoring run stretched across each of Deportivo’s first five league matches. That sequence made him the first player since Zlatan Ibrahimović to score in each of his team’s opening five La Liga games.

His goals had made him one of the standout performers of Deportivo’s early-season campaign, making the timing of the injury particularly damaging for the club.

Now, instead of continuing his impressive scoring form, Aubameyang faces a period of rehabilitation after surgery.

The striker is expected to undergo the operation on Thursday, with reports indicating that he could spend around two months away from competitive action. The final recovery period, however, will depend on the nature of the procedure and how he responds during rehabilitation.

For Deportivo, the challenge will be finding a way to cope without their most productive attacking player during his absence.

Aubameyang’s experience, movement and goals have been central to their strong start, and his absence leaves the club needing other attacking options to step forward.

The Gabonese forward will now turn his attention to recovery as he prepares for surgery, with the immediate priority being to return to full fitness before making his way back onto the pitch.

After such a prolific opening to the season, the injury represents a significant interruption to what had been an impressive return to La Liga for the veteran striker.
