Fulham secured back-to-back Premier League victories by beating Coventry City 1-0, with Oscar Bobb settling a largely uneventful match in the closing stages.
The result lifted Fulham to 12th place on eight points, two clear of Coventry, whose attacking difficulties continued under Frank Lampard and left them 19th in the table.
Clear chances were rare for long periods before Bobb produced the decisive moment. The Fulham forward collected the ball inside the penalty area, went beyond a defender and guided his finish into the bottom corner.
Fulham had threatened to take the lead in the first half when Josh King’s shot struck the crossbar. Alex Iwobi was unable to convert the rebound from close range.
Coventry looked to counter-attack, with Brandon Thomas-Asante involved in several of their forward moves, but they repeatedly lacked the final touch in front of goal. Fulham also appealed for a penalty late in the first half after Thomas-Asante went down in the area, but the referee decided Calvin Bassey had pulled the Coventry player’s shirt before the incident.
Coventry’s problems deepened in the 60th minute when defender Bobby Thomas was forced off with an injury. Despite applying pressure after the interval, Lampard’s side could not find a way through.
Coventry’s finishing problem
The main weakness in Coventry’s return to the top flight has been their lack of attacking efficiency. They began the season with two successive wins, but have since lost 3-1 to Tottenham and now to Fulham.
They have scored only six goals in their opening eight league matches, with four of those coming in the same game against Newcastle. Coventry have failed to score in the first half in seven of those eight fixtures.
Their expected-goals figure against Fulham was only 0.5, underlining how difficult they found it to turn counter-attacks and other openings into genuine threats. Coventry are now just one place above the bottom of the table before their next fixture against Sunderland.
Fulham’s progress remains incomplete
Fulham will hope their two consecutive wins can change the direction of their season after taking only two points from their first six league matches. Those early results included draws against prominent opposition in Manchester United and Liverpool.
Marco Silva’s side dominated possession against Coventry, holding 64% compared with their opponents’ 36%. However, that control produced few clear opportunities, with Fulham recording an expected-goals figure of only 0.55.
In the end, Fulham required Bobb’s individual quality to claim all three points. The victory improves their position, but the performance also highlighted the need to create more chances and make more effective use of their possession.
