Morocco’s football federation has moved to dismiss speculation over the future of head coach Walid Regragui, saying no decision has been taken following the country’s defeat in the Africa Cup of Nations final.
Sources within the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) told Alyaoum24 that reports suggesting Regragui had resigned are unfounded, insisting that no formal step has been taken by the coach since the end of the 2025 tournament.
According to the federation, Regragui has not submitted any resignation to the governing body, and discussions about his future remain open.
Officials stressed that the situation is still under evaluation, contradicting widespread rumours that emerged after Morocco’s loss to Senegal in the final.
A review meeting is expected to take place shortly between Regragui and FRMF president Fouzi Lekjaa.
The purpose of the talks will be to assess Morocco’s campaign at the continental tournament and to begin preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The meeting will focus on a technical analysis of the team’s performances and the broader strategy for upcoming international competitions.
It is expected to determine whether the current coaching setup will continue through to the next World Cup cycle, should both parties agree on the conditions for extending their collaboration.
The uncertainty surrounding Regragui’s position follows a tense AFCON final that ended in a 1-0 defeat for Morocco against Senegal.
The match was marked by several controversial moments, including the cancellation of a Senegalese goal by referee Jean-Jacques Ndala and a missed penalty by Morocco’s Brahim Diaz.
Tensions were further heightened when Senegalese players briefly left the pitch in protest, contributing to a charged atmosphere that has continued to fuel debate in the aftermath of the final.
While disappointment over the result has intensified scrutiny of the Moroccan technical staff, the federation has underlined that no immediate conclusions have been drawn.
Officials maintain that any decision regarding the national team coach will come only after a structured evaluation process.
For now, the FRMF says its priority remains analysing the lessons of the continental campaign and setting a clear direction ahead of the next major international challenge, rather than responding to speculation.
