Russia Defeats Morocco 2-0 in World Cup Warm-Up Match
Russia continued their strong pre-World Cup form with a 2-0 victory over Morocco in Moscow on Friday, in a match that served as a key test ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
The encounter marked Morocco’s third match under coach Badou Zaki, following friendlies against Mozambique and Angola. The Atlas Lions started brightly and nearly took the lead when midfielder Mbark Boussoufa struck the post, offering a promising moment for the visitors.
However, from that very chance, Russia capitalized immediately on a set-piece situation—a vulnerability that had troubled Morocco throughout the match. Captain Vasily Berezutski scored twice in quick succession in the 29th minute, both times beating Morocco’s goalkeeper Fegrouche from close range.
Russia maintained pressure throughout the game, generating several scoring opportunities. Morocco’s goalkeeper Fegrouche made notable saves at the 45th and 50th minutes to keep his side in the game. But the Russian dominance was sealed in the 55th minute by Yuri Zhirkov, the former Chelsea winger, who delivered a stunning volley under the bar to secure the win.
Unbeaten in their pre-season fixtures, Russia will take confidence from this performance as they prepare to compete on home soil in Brazil.
For Morocco, the focus remains on building strength for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, which they are set to host. Despite the defeat, the Atlas Lions showed encouraging moments as they continue to develop ahead of the continental tournament.
