Friday Ubong: Nigeria winger joins Kano Pillars on free transfer from Rivers United

Nigeria winger Friday Ubong has joined Kano Pillars on a free transfer from NPFL rivals Rivers United. The 28-year-old left-sided attacker moves after his contract expired, adding top-flight experience to the Kano club’s attacking options.

Ubong, who was born in Port Harcourt and stands at 1.85m, is primarily a left winger but operates on his right foot, giving Kano Pillars an inverted wide option on their flank. He arrives with a current market valuation of €75,000 and extensive game time in Nigerian domestic football.

The move continues a long NPFL career for Ubong, who has made 284 league appearances with 54 goals and 20 assists across his spells in the division. He also brings continental experience, having featured in both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup, as well as enjoying a stint in Armenia earlier in his career.

Ubong originally made his name with Akwa United, where he was part of the side that won the Nigerian league title in the 2020-21 season. He left the Uyo club for Rivers United in August 2024 before completing his switch to Kano Pillars on 24 July 2026.

With no contract end date made public, Ubong now links up with Kano Pillars as a permanent addition following his free transfer from Rivers United.
