French-Togolese defender Lorenz Assignon explains motivation behind VfB Stuttgart move
French-born defender of Togolese descent, Lorenz Assignon, has opened up about why he signed for German Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart in the summer transfer window.
According to him, Stuttgart is a great club with amazing fans, and their ambition to play in Europe motivated him to sign for the club.
“VfB is a great club with fantastic fans. The team consists of many good players, the level is high, and we play internationally,” Assignon told Stadion Aktuell, the club’s official magazine.
“For me, it was clear: if I were to leave Rennes, it would only be for another step forward.”
Assignon further revealed that discussions with head coach Sebastian Hoeneß played a crucial role in his decision, highlighting the personal connection they developed beyond football.
“We talked not only about football and my role at VfB, but also about topics like family and culture in Germany. After that, my heart and my head said ‘yes.'”
Reports suggest Stuttgart paid around €12 million for Assignon. However, his start at the club has been mixed, featuring in the starting lineup just once in the Bundesliga so far and appearing on the bench during their recent 2-1 victory over FC Cologne.
Despite limited league appearances, the defender has seen more consistent action in the Champions League and DFB Cup, playing the full 90 minutes in three matches.
