French-Senegalese tactician Wilfried Nancy has emerged as the leading contender to take over as Celtic’s next permanent manager, with the Columbus Crew boss granted permission to open discussions with the Scottish champions.

Celtic have been operating under Martin O’Neill on an interim basis since Brendan Rodgers stepped down at the end of October, but the club is pushing ahead in its search for a long-term successor.

According to L’Équipe, Nancy has been cleared to speak with the Glasgow side and is eager to make a return to European football.

Although still contracted to Columbus Crew, Nancy’s season in the MLS has already come to an end after their playoff loss to Cincinnati.

His tenure in the United States included guiding the Crew to the league title in 2023, a triumph that significantly raised his profile.

With Celtic currently sitting second in the Premiership, the timing appears favourable for Nancy as he considers his next move.

The 48-year-old is now viewed as a strong candidate to step into the role and lead the club through the next chapter.
