Patrick Vieira has expressed his delight after signing a contract extension with Genoa, confirming he will remain in charge of the Serie A side until 2027.
The former France international, who has Senegalese roots, took over the managerial reins at Genoa midway through the 2023/24 campaign and quickly turned the club’s fortunes around.
His impact was immediate, guiding the team to safety in Italy’s top flight while instilling a renewed sense of belief among players and fans alike.
“It has been a very intense period since I arrived in Genoa last November. We managed to ensure Genoa’s permanence in Serie A and to finish the season with pride and determination, as this club deserves,” Vieira said.
The 48-year-old previously coached Crystal Palace and Strasbourg, and his arrival at Genoa followed the dismissal of Alberto Gilardino.
Since then, Vieira has overseen a steady rise in form, culminating in a solid end to the season that convinced the club hierarchy he was the right man for the long term.
“I am very proud of what we have built and achieved, all together. After the last match in Bologna we have always been in contact with the club and the directors to analyze this season and prepare properly for the next one,” he added.
Club director Marco Ottolini hailed the decision as a continuation of the club’s upward momentum, stating: “We are happy with this renewal with Patrick, a natural consequence of what we have experienced together and the progress made in recent months.”
“We share a vision and objectives, and we are determined to continue the growth path for Genoa.”
Vieira, who confirmed he will take a short holiday before pre-season preparations begin, said the decision to extend his stay came naturally.
