French Ligue 1 outfit RC Lens are closing in on the acquisition of DR Congo international Arthur Masuaku in the current transfer window.

The enterprising left-back is expected to join Lens on a six months deal from Sunderland as part of plans to reinforce their defensive ranks for the Ligue 1 title push. The Congolese international is seen as a short-term solution to address growing concerns at the back.

The decision to bring in Masuaku was taken jointly by the club’s management and head coach Pierre Sage, following a spate of defensive injuries that have stretched the squad thin. The situation was further complicated by the departure of Deiver Machado to Nantes, creating an urgent need for cover on the left side of defense.

Masuaku’s experience is viewed as a major asset. At 32, he has accumulated years of top-level football across different leagues and is familiar with the demands of French football. He previously featured in Ligue 1 during the 2013/14 season with Valenciennes, a background that should help him adapt quickly to life at Lens.

Although he recently picked up an injury while on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, Masuaku is reportedly nearing full fitness and is expected to be available for selection in the near future.

His limited game time at Sunderland this season, making just four appearanceshas also made a temporary move appealing for all parties involved.

If completed as expected, the loan deal would provide Lens with valuable depth and experience during a crucial phase of the campaign, while offering Masuaku the chance to regain rhythm and contribute to a title-chasing side in familiar surroundings.
