Birmingham City have expressed serious interest in signing Montpellier forward Tanguy Coulibaly, as the French club brace for further departures following their relegation from Ligue 1.

Coulibaly, a 24-year-old striker of Ivorian descent, has long been linked with a move away from La Mosson, with speculation dating back to the January transfer window.

Although the player previously dismissed suggestions that he was seeking an exit, the club’s recent drop to Ligue 2 has reportedly reignited his desire to consider options elsewhere.

Montpellier, already facing the financial and sporting consequences of relegation, may now be more inclined to offload players to balance the books.

Coulibaly, who came through the Paris Saint-Germain academy system, is seen as a potential asset to sell, especially as the club aims to streamline its wage structure ahead of the new season.

According to reports from French journalist Mohamed Toubach-Ter, newly-promoted Championship side Birmingham City are now among the clubs actively pursuing Coulibaly.

The English outfit, eager to bolster their squad following promotion from League One, are understood to view the pacey attacker as a valuable addition capable of thriving in the highly competitive second tier of English football.

Despite being under contract until the end of next season, Coulibaly’s situation appears increasingly uncertain. His role at Montpellier has diminished in recent months, with limited playing time hampering his ability to make a consistent impact on the pitch.

The opportunity to start fresh in England could be a turning point in his career, offering both more minutes and a system that suits his attacking profile.

For Birmingham City, Coulibaly represents a relatively low-risk investment with high potential upside. Transfermarkt currently estimates his market value at €1.5 million—an accessible figure for a Championship club with ambitions of returning to the Premier League.

A deal at that price point would not only fit within Birmingham’s financial strategy but also offer the player a platform to showcase his abilities in a new environment.

Montpellier, for their part, would likely welcome the opportunity to cash in on the player as they attempt to navigate the challenges of life in Ligue 2.

The club’s demotion has forced a reassessment of their roster, with several players expected to leave before the transfer window closes. Coulibaly, given his background and potential, remains one of their more marketable assets.

The striker’s journey from the youth ranks of PSG to his current position at Montpellier has been marked by glimpses of talent but also inconsistency.

A move to English football could serve as the catalyst he needs to find his rhythm and maturity as a forward.

While no formal bid has yet been confirmed, sources suggest Birmingham are closely monitoring the situation and could make an approach in the coming days.

With the Championship season already underway, clubs are moving quickly to finalize their squads—and Coulibaly may be among those making headlines before the window shuts.

As things stand, the player’s future remains unresolved. But with interest building and Montpellier under pressure to sell, Coulibaly may soon be preparing for a new chapter in English football.
