French-Guinean centre-back Dayot Upamecano has reaffirmed his commitment to Bayern Munich, even as Manchester United step up their interest in signing him.
The 26-year-old is in the final year of his contract with the Bundesliga champions, but insists discussions over an extension are progressing positively.
Upamecano, born in Évreux, France, has roots in Guinea-Bissau through his family heritage. Known for his physical presence and composure on the ball, he has been a mainstay in Bayern’s backline since joining from RB Leipzig in 2021.
Manchester United have been closely monitoring his situation, with German outlet BILD’s Christian Falk reporting the Premier League side is preparing an approach.
The uncertainty surrounding his contract had initially fuelled speculation that the defender could be prised away from the Allianz Arena this summer.
However, Bayern are determined to keep him and have intensified efforts to secure his long-term future. Sporting director Max Eberl and technical director Christoph Freund have been engaged in negotiations with Upamecano’s representatives in recent weeks.
While no formal agreement has yet been finalised, club insiders believe talks are moving in the right direction.
Upamecano himself has offered strong indications he wants to remain in Munich, telling reporters: “I’m really happy here. There are now talks with Max, Christoph and my agent. We’ll see what happens.”
His stance is likely to cool United’s hopes of bringing him to Old Trafford, though the Premier League giants are expected to keep monitoring developments until a new deal is officially signed.
For Bayern, retaining Upamecano would be a significant statement as they seek to maintain domestic dominance and reclaim the UEFA Champions League title.
