French FA vows legal action after racist abuse directed at Mbappe
The French Football Federation has pledged to take legal action after France captain Kylian Mbappé was subjected to racist remarks by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla.
The federation issued a strongly worded statement expressing its full support for Mbappe, describing the comments as unacceptable and confirming that the matter would be referred to prosecutors.
The response follows earlier condemnations from Mbappe himself, French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo and France’s Minister for Digital Affairs, Marina Ferrari.
Federation condemns racist comments
The controversy stems from remarks made by Amarilla after France’s World Cup victory over Paraguay, during which she directed a series of offensive comments at the French forward.
In its official statement, the French Football Federation said the remarks amounted to a criminal offence and called for those responsible to be held accountable.
“The racist remarks made by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla against Kylian Mbappé are abhorrent and completely unacceptable. How can anyone make such remarks? These remarks constitute a crime and must be condemned, and those responsible should be prosecuted here as well as elsewhere. Therefore, the French Football Federation will refer the matter to the public prosecutor’s office to take the necessary legal action.”
Full support for France captain
The federation reaffirmed its backing for Mbappe and the entire French squad, while extending its support to all victims of racism and discrimination.
“The French Federation confirms its full support for its captain and players, and for all victims of such hateful statements in general.”
It also stressed its commitment to combating racism in football and beyond.
“The Federation remains more committed than ever to fighting racism and all forms of discrimination. Such statements are offensive to those who make them and to those who promote them. The players of the French national team represent France, and therefore, insulting them is an insult to our country.”
The statement comes as France continue their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, with Mbappe expected to lead Les Bleus in their upcoming quarter-final against Morocco national football team.
